The Memo Arts Centre is pleased to announce that it has become Barry’s first “dementia-friendly” art centre and cinema venue, by making the pledge to become a member of Barry’s Dementia Friendly Community as part of an Alzheimer Society’s campaign called ‘Dementia Friendly Communities’.
The Dementia Friendly Barry campaign aim is to involve and support people who have dementia, as well as their families, in community life.
To increase the understanding of dementia, and to support and engage those people affected visiting the Memo, our staff attended Dementia Friends training and are now signed up as Dementia Friends.
General Manager, Kate Long said: “We are delighted that we have been identified as a friendly and supportive business for the dementia community. We understand we have a duty of care to our users, and being part of Barry’s Dementia Friendly Community enables us to be aware of the social challenges that we are likely to come across, it is important for us to understand and have empathy as a team so we can provide a good service.
The Memo aims to be an accessible venue for people with dementia and many other challenges, we hope that the training sessions delivered by Dementia Friendly Barry will help us develop more accessible opportunities for our local community and users to engage with.
The Memo currently hosts relaxed film screenings for vulnerable adults and will shortly be introducing dementia friendly screenings, as well as working with Contact a Family to develop more relaxed screenings for young people and children with disabilities.”
The Memo will be displaying its Dementia Friendly certificate along with the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friendly Kite Mark at its premises.
