BFI Film Academy: Break Into Film 

BFI Film Academy offers opportunities for 16-24 year olds, anywhere in the UK, to get to know more about film and how to make a career in the screen industries. A range of accessible courses offer opportunities for those wanting to test the water, through to young people keen to hone their skills.

As part of BFI Film Academy, Chapter is proud to present a pan-Wales series of venue-based film education activity, including film screenings, film courses, industry days, masterclasses, film making grants and 1-to-1 mentoring.

This activity is part of the UK-wide BFI Film Academy programme and is supported using funds from the National Lottery.

Memo Arts Centre: Modular Film Course Mon 9 – Fri 13 August
A series of interactive film workshops for young people aged 16-24 years old. Taking place in person at Memo Arts Centre. Book onto one or all four events!

Sessions: 9.45am – 4pm
Monday 9 August: Make a film in a day with your smartphone (in Welsh)
Tuesday 10 August: Make a film in a day with your smartphone (in English)
Wednesday 11 August: Story, Script and Storyboard
Thursday 12 August: Camera Sound and Sequence
Friday 13 August: Editing

Monday 9 (in Welsh) & Tuesday 10  August (in English):
Make a film in a day with your smartphone

This workshop will take participants through the complete filmmaking process, from initial idea to finished film. It will include an introduction to film language and the continuity system; planning and storyboarding a short film sequence; how to get good shots with a smartphone; filming the sequence; editing with the free VN Editor app on iPhone or Android (participants will need to install this beforehand).

Wednesday 11 August:
Story, Script and Storyboard 

This day workshop will focus on film storytelling and planning. We’ll look at what makes a good story including generating ideas, the ‘elevator pitch’, story structure, writing a film script, and using storyboards to visualise the film.

Thursday 12 August:
Camera, Sound and Sequence 

Practical camerawork, lighting and sound recording. We’ll explore how to set up and film shots, the effect of different lenses and focus, using natural and artificial light, camera position and camera movements, and continuity. The afternoon will focus on sound: key elements of a film soundtrack and how to record live sound.

Friday 13 August:
Editing 

This workshop will focus on hands-on editing, working in small groups. It will cover continuity editing and montage, and planning and editing a soundtrack which combines live sound, ambient and spot effects, and music.

A limited amount of bursaries are available for young people who wish to attend all workshops but live in a low-income household. To request a bursary application form please email: learning@chapter.org
