New Memo Volunteers ready to make waves

On Friday 26th July the Memo Arts Centre’s newly appointed Volunteers and Participation Co-ordinator Megan Merrett was joined by Dr Jane Salisbury, a Trustee of Memo Arts Centre, to welcome a small group of newly recruited volunteers to their first induction session.

Alongside their training, the six new Volunteers learned that some 20.1 million individuals gave “gift time” to organisations across the UK in 2017 1 8, and how Volunteering can play a major part in wellbeing and health.

During 2019 the Memo’s ambition is to recruit and train 100 new Volunteers to share their talents by supporting the Memos events programme and to help look after Barry’s lovely old venue with its surrounding grounds which need some tender loving attention.
Not many people are aware that the Memo Arts Centre is a registered charity that receives funding and works hard to generate 63% of its turnover , but like many arts organisations, the Memo needs more hands on deck to support its growing programme, community projects and to help deliver the Memos big plans for the future.

As a registered Charity, the Memo works to deliver the best arts and cinema programme for all to enjoy . This year the Memo is especially pleased to also be working in partnership with the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Barry Town Council to support the delivery of Barry Making Waves project. This three year project focus is to support Barry’s development to create a greater sense of place. The project has received funding from the National Lottery Heritage Funds Great Place Scheme and is helping to support the new Volunteer scheme based at the Memo.

So, if you have some time to share, come and sign up to be a Volunteer, the Memo wants as many as possible to join in the fun and share in the pride of seeing Barry develop its arts and heritage across the town. As a Memo Volunteer you will be able to share your talents, receive training, meet new friends and develop new skills.

With a range of volunteer roles available, the arts centre is calling on the people of Barry to join its volunteer team whatever your skills might be. From gardening to set building, selling popcorn to sewing, or even simply sharing your smile to make our audiences and users feel extra welcome and cared for during their visits, join today to help make Barry a great place to live, work and play.
