First World War Centenary 2014 at the Memo

The Memo Arts Centre will be presenting a number of special events and film screenings to mark the First World War Centenary.

In the 1920′s, the people of Barry wanted to provide a memorial for the many Barrians who had given their lives during the First World War.  Combined with the wholehearted support of the people of Barry and the extremely generous help of the Davies family (descendants of David Davies who founded the docks) they succeeded, and they built the Memorial Hall Theatre and Cenotaph which opened in November 11^th 1932.

To mark the commemoration of the 100^th year since the start of WW1, the Memo has programmed a series of events and film screenings, including a special screening of Hedd Wyn (12) at 1.00pm & 7.00pm on Monday August 4^th with free admission. http://memo.studiosgweb.co.uk/events/hedd-wyn-12/

Following the evening screening, the Memo and Royal British Legion (Wales) Barry Branch invite you to join them at the Cenotaph as part of a nation-wide event, Lights Out, to mark the hour that Britain entered the First World War one hundred years ago. Lights Out invites everyone in the UK to turn off their lights from 10pm until 11pm leaving on a single light or candle for this shared moment of reflection. We invite people in Barry to join us at the Cenotaph at 9.30pm, where you can light and leave your candle to be part of this special commemoration event at 10.00pm http://memo.studiosgweb.co.uk/events/lights-out/
