Our digital cinema and live streaming development is ready to bring blockbuster cinema back to Barry

The Memo is set to start an exciting new digital cinema and live streaming programme, which will bring the very best stage productions and blockbuster films to our new cinema screen. We will be officially launching our new digital programme on Thursday 15 October at 7.00pm with the National Theatre Live satellite broadcast of the eagerly awaited and compelling Barbican production of Hamlet, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

We owe a big thank you for our digital development to the Arts Council of Wales Capital Lottery and to the Vale of Glamorgan Council who, together with all our funders, have made our new digital cinema possible.

The Memo’s General Manager Kate Long said “getting cinema back to Barry has been a long-term commitment for us, the internal work undertaken to install the equipment created a few challenges, some disruption and lots of dust, but it is definitely going to be worth it. There was a real swirl of excitement amongst the staff when we heard the engineers testing our new twenty-two surround speaker system, now we can’t wait for our local community to come in and experience the improved picture and sound quality for themselves, and more importantly we want them to support their new cinema at the Memo”.

The project has enabled us to purchase new audio description headsets for our audiences with hearing and visual impairments, and provide better accessibility to our Front of House services, with access to a new seating area in the Balcony for our wheelchair users, whilst maintaining an audience capacity of 550 for each screening.

The cinema investment is a great step in the right direction for the Memo’s future development plans, not only can we present digital cinema and live streaming at its best, but now we can offer a an exciting and diverse new film programme to include a greater diversity of content and activities, including a future Barry Film Festival for all ages in our local community to experience and enjoy.

The Memo is delighted to have also received funding from the Wales Film Hub to present 8 special film projects as of a nationwide BFI LOVE project from October – December. Our BFI LOVE inspired film include something for everyone to enjoy, from schools, families and Mask Ball participation events to a wonderful film screening and Afternoon Tea Dance celebrating the 70th anniversary of Brief Encounter.

Tickets are already on sale for our BFI LOVE programme, as well as all of our live streaming and theatre events, including the showing of the National Theatre’s live production of Hamlet starring Benedict Cumberbatch, which will be broadcast to 40 different countries as part of National Theatre Live.
