Summer of Fun launches at the Memo!

A big Thank You to the Vale of Glamorgan Council, who have supported this fantastic programme at the Memo with funding provided through the Welsh Government “Summer of Fun” Programme. 

 

This summer we’re bringing some spectacular free experiences to the Memo for children, young people and families in the Vale of Glamorgan as part of the Summer of Fun!

From mermaid puppets to a live percussion concert, from making your own hula hoop to watching Minions on the Big Screen, from toddlers moving and grooving to comedy for 16+, from bilingual insects doing athletics in the park to Terrible Tudors on our main stage, from Clown School to crawling into the belly of a giant inflatable whale… we have got an incredible concoction of treats to spread joy and positivity this summer.

THE CURIOUS CASE OF ABERLLIW
Sat 2 Jul, 11am – 4:30pm
An outdoor interactive mystery adventure for families.

HORRIBLE HISTORIES – TERRIBLE TUDORS
Sat 9 Jul, 2pm & 5pm
We all want to meet people from history. The trouble is everyone is dead! So prepare yourselves for Terrible Tudors live on the main stage at the Memo… It’s history with the nasty bits left in!

MEMO STARLINGS: MOVE & GROOVE SESSIONS
Wed 20 Jul, Wed 21 Sept, 9:30am  – 11am
Join us for our NEW Starlings Move and Groove stay and play sessions where the focus is on physical movement and play. We have some fantastic new equipment to work on our gross motor skills, balance, coordination and strength. From the climbing frame to the balance bikes, we are sure to have a busy, super fun time!

MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU (U)

The origin of how the world’s greatest supervillain first met his iconic Minions, forged cinema’s most despicable crew and faced off against the most unstoppable criminal force ever assembled.
Enjoy this 2022 blockbuster animation on the biggest screen in the Vale.

THE WHALE – PLASTIC OCEAN
Wed 27 Jul, from 11am
Bold explorers squeeze into the belly of an enormous inflatable Sperm Whale where they find themselves in the depths of the bubbling, kelp-swirling ocean. They encounter an acrobatic diver who leads them swimmingly through the age-old journey of the life of an ancient Leatherback Turtle.
With the use of exquisite puppets, comedy ad music, Circo Rum Ba Ba explore the tale of sea creatures and their battle to survive in an ocean full of rubbish. The audience help to save the turtle and the Whale from a deluge of plastic and travel from the Indian ocean to a coral reef, leaving feeling empowered that everyone can make a difference.

MERMARELLA: CINDERELLA OF THE SEA
Wed 3 Aug, 11am / 2pm
Puppetry, shadow theatre and music, plus a little help from the audience, bring this tale to life with a modern twist.

SATURDAY DRAMA WORKSHOPS 
Sat 6, 13, 20, 27 Aug, Sat 3, 10, 17, 24 Sept, 10am  – 1pm
Approaches to Theatre is a practical exploration of Drama and the Performing Arts. Drama Practitioner Megan Mattravers will be leading the workshops.
This is suitable for ages 11-18, no previous knowledge or experience is required.
Do you want to learn about Acting, Directing and everything in between? Have you ever wondered how a play goes from page to stage? Do you want to learn about different styles of theatre?
Each session is different. You can come to all of them, or pick the ones you’re available for.

THE RAILWAY CHILDREN RETURN (U)
Tues 9 Aug, Wed 10, Thurs 11 Aug
Picking up nearly forty years after the events of the original film ‘The Railway Children Return’ will take audiences on an exciting and heart-warming journey, in which a new group of children are evacuated to a Yorkshire village during World War 2, where they encounter a young soldier, who like them, is far away from home…
Enjoy this beautiful film on the largest cinema screen in the Vale.

THE GREAT INSECT GAMES / TRYCHFILOD A’R CAMPAU CAMPUS

Flex your muscles and practise your lunges, it’s time for the Great Insect Games!
Hosted by our gym junkie grasshoppers you can take part in the hare brained events. Who will win at synchronised swimming, the spider or the slug?! And how will the butterly fare at weightlifting?! How does a snail wear boxing gloves?
Join us for this gloriously bug infested opening ceremony and sing along to the Insect National Anthem at this fun packed show for all the family.

CONUNDRUM – PERCUSSION CONCERT
Wed 24 Aug, 1:30pm
An afternoon music concert for all ages, with percussion duo ConunDrum.
ConunDrum are Harry Greenway and Ellen Smith. Their repertoire covers a large variety of music, both in style and in the percussion instruments used. It includes genres such as classical transcriptions, jazz-influenced words, contemporary compositions (some self-penned) and their own arrangements and medleys of modern songs.

MAKE & TAKE
Fri 2 Sept, 10am, 12pm, 2pm
Make your own hula-hoop or spinning poi, learn how to use them and take them home in this intergenerational workshop with Citrus Arts.
Make circus-related items with demonstrations on how to use them from the amazing Citrus Arts team. Families are welcomed to work together to create fabulous circus things to take home.
Tickets are available for children and young people 0-24 and their accompanying grown ups.

CLOWN SCHOOL
Sat 10 Sept, 2pm – 4pm
Clown School workshops with female-led award-winning theatre company, Familia de la Noche. Dismiss seriousness and embrace silliness.
Become a qualified fool and an ambassador of laughter with two hours of Clown School for ages 12-15 year olds.

MEMO COMEDY CLUB
Thurs 22 Sept, 7:30pm
Join us for a night of laughter as four of UK’s finest stand-up comedians raise the rood at the Memo’s Comedy Club! Little Wander, the team behind the brilliant Machynlleth Comedy Festival and Aberystwyth Comedy Festival, bring their much-loved comedy club to Barry.
Line-up to be announced, but it’s going to be cracking!
Suitable for ages 16+, Summer of Fun tickets available for ages 16-25.
