About Hopkins Oliver Duo: Elly Hopkins (vocals) and Stuart Oliver (guitar) met jamming on the vibrant Bristol jazz scene. Together, inspired by artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Django Reinhardt they render their
own interpretations of early jazz standards with all the radiance and intimacy of a fireside session.
After an early career as a theatre practitioner Elly took a life-changing solo trip to New Orleans, spending three months absorbing the sounds and soul of the birthplace of jazz. On returning she embraced musical stints in London and her native Ireland, finally moving to Bristol in 2016 where she was fast assimilated into the thriving swing scene. She studies with Claire Martin OBE and continues to visit New Orleans for inspiration.
Stuart started his musical career playing pop songs in bars and clubs in the South West of England. He moved to Bristol in 2012, finding his colours as a guitarist on the trail of exciting jazz musicians like James Morton and Andy Sheppard. He spent time living in Paris studying gypsy hot club music, steadily developing his swing guitar style and on returning to the South West began composing and recording extensively. An in-demand guitarist on the Bristol jazz scene he also continues to teach music at Cert Ed level
